FAQs

What are your candles made of?

Samantha's Candle Co. scented candles are made with all-natural soy wax, braided cotton wicks, and scented oils. Just wax, wick, and scent with no other additives or dyes.

What are "wet spots" and "frosting" on my candle?

Wet spots occur when wax pulls away from the container edge. The science is relatively simple: wax expands when it heats up and contracts as it cools.  Candle making involves melting wax into a liquid (expansion) then pouring it into a container where it cools down (contraction). The most dramatic volume change happens right after pouring the candle. Candles usually go through “micro” temperature changes throughout their life. Anytime the temperature changes, candle wax risks pulling away from the jar sides. This can happen during curing, shipping, and storing the candle, and preventing it is nearly impossible. They are primarily cosmetic and do not affect the candle. When the top or sides of the wax has a crystalline, white color coating, we refer to this as frosting or blooming. Frosting is a natural characteristic of soy and it is one way that you can tell if a candle is really made with pure, all-natural soy wax.

Why should I trim the wick and only burn your candles for 3-4 hours at a time?

Good practices for any candle are meant to prolong a candle’s burn time. A longer wick creates a larger flame, a larger flame melts the wax faster, and the wax melts faster than the wick burns away. So the longer your candle burns, the larger the flame gets, causing your candle to melt faster and faster. This also includes that the first thing you should do when you buy our candles or any other, is trim the wick before the first burn. Burning your candle for 3-4 hours at a time ensures that the wax melts all the way to the edge of the container. The melted wax (not the flame) is what gives off your candle’s scent, so this will maximize your candle’s scent when lit. It will also prevent your candle from “tunneling”, or burning a hole down the center of the candle while leaving a ring of un-melted wax along the inside of the container.
